Based on the need to move forward in the implementation of Colombia’s environmental and sector policies, it is imperative to establish mechanisms and instruments to solve the problem identified on plastic management, especially single-use plastics.
It is expected that by 2030, Colombia will have implemented concrete measures for a sustainable management of plastic, through actions of prevention, substitution, reduction and reincorporation of materials in the productive cycle. It is considered essential to work on information, communication and citizen culture actions, as well as in the articulation of all the actors in society, promoting research, innovation, sustainable business and collaborative schemes.
So the National Plan for the Sustainable Management of Single-Use Plastic, of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, established, in 2019, actions to address the problem that has generated the bad management of plastic and especially that of a only use.
Action 1. Gradual replacement of materials for the manufacture of single-use products
The companies responsible for the use, distribution and marketing of single-use plastic products listed below: Containers, packages and containers used to pack or package prepared food and food on site, to carry or consume. Dishes, trays, knives, forks, spoons and glasses; Mixers and cigarettes for drinks and plastic supports for inflating pumps; Cotton flakes or flexible swabs with cotton tips; they must proceed to replace them with reusable products or products of compostable materials in the following terms from the issuance of the law that is issued to regulate the plastics of a single use.
Action 2. Reduction and replacement of plastic bag materials
The companies responsible for the manufacture, distribution and marketing of the following products:
Bags used to pack, load or transport packages and merchandise, distributed at payment points; Rolls of empty extendable film bags arranged in commercial devices for loading or carrying bulk food sold in such places, except for raw animal products. Plastic bags for packing newspapers, magazines and invoices, Bags used in laundries to pack washed clothes. will require reducing consumption and replacing with reusable products or compostable products from January 1 of the year 2025.
Action 3. A new culture of using reusable products in trading devices.
In the establishments that offer prepared food and food (restaurants, cafeterias, shops, etc.), the non-delivery of single-use products of any material will be encouraged when the consumption is carried out without prejudice to the current sanitary requirements sanitary The sale of soft drinks, juices, water and other beverages in reusable glasses will be promoted and establishing the logistics for distribution.
Action 4. Environmental management in homes
The use of reusable or compostable materials is promoted in online orders, known as “domiciles”. From 2022, the free delivery of the following single-use products, of any material, with the exception of specific certified compostables will be prohibited.
